Google Easter Eggs - The 418 (Teapot) Error Page
Google is quite the master when it comes to Error Page Easter Eggs. You might have seen that in our Chrome Dino post, we mentioned that the original game starts when you visit the Error Page that says "No Network". Similarly, Google has hidden yet another Easter Egg in one of it's secret Error Pages, called the "I am a Teapot" Error Page.
So what exactly is this Error Page and how do you visit it?
When you try to access content on a server that is running IIS v7, v7.5 or later versions by using the HTTP protocol, IIS returns a numeric code that indicates that status of the response. The HTTP status code is recorded in the IIS log. More info on the topic here. Every Google Error Page signifies that IIS has returned a specific status code. Most often it is an error code. This time however, we notice that 418 is not any official Error Code. Thus, it is just a random HTTP status code with an attached Easter Egg 😉.
It is viewable by going to the following link - google.com/teapot - or just clicking here. A view of the page has been given below :-
When you click the teapot on any computer device, the teapot will tip over and pour tea into the teacup near it. This action can be recreated on mobile devices by tilting the screen.
HTTPS plays a very big role in our day-to-day internet surfing lives, and Google hasn't forgotten that. This Easter Egg is a nod to it, and we haven't missed that. As Google continues to embed Eggs in it's many services, continuing to amuse the generations to come.
Happy Hunting!
