Google Hangouts Easter Eggs - Special Category
The Konami code is one of my favourite things. Ever. I'll be honest and say that we are currently working on a special post for it. It is so special, that we even had to have a special post under the Hangouts Easter Eggs category. Without wasting any time, let me brief you about it.
What is "The Konami Code" ?
The Konami Code is a very sophisticated "cheat code" known to any gamer who is worth their controllers. That's my explanation, but here's what Wikipedia says :-
The Konami Code was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto who was developing the home port of the 1985 arcade game Gradius for the NES. Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created a cheat code to give the player a full set of power-ups (normally attained gradually throughout the game).[2] After entering the sequence using the controller when the game was paused the player received all available power-ups. The code was meant to be removed prior to publishing, but this was overlooked and discovered as the game was being prepared for mass production. The developers decided to leave it there, as removing it could result in new bugs and glitches. The sequence was easy enough to remember for testers and simultaneously sufficiently hard to enter accidentally during the gameplay for unsuspecting users.

What does it have to do with Google Hangouts ?
Google Hangouts has kept the Konami Code alive in the form of an Easter Egg. The Konami Code stands out from the rest of the Hangouts Easter Eggs for the unique history behind it.
What does it do ?
This Egg is similar to the "/bikeshed" Easter Egg which changes the background of the chat room to a random colour (more info at our post on "Google Hangouts Commands").
How do I activate it?
The Easter Egg can be triggered by entering the Konami Code into the empty chatbox, as graphically represented below.
If you enter it right, the background changes to a mountain scenery as shown in the GIF below.
Google has kept the Konami Code in a very convenient place. I, for one, use it every time I open Hangouts, for it reminds me that the History has a special place for Easter Eggs too. Not just wars and famines. The Konami Code will continue to amuse the coming generations, as we continue to explore this glorious era of tech, and undoubtedly, Easter Eggs.
Happy Hunting!
